Thyme oil (Thymus vulgaris L.) is not only good for battling infectious diseases, but it is very supportive to your liver, and it can help to strengthen your body's ability to produce glutathione levels that decrease with age.

Dr. Ray Sahelian states that glutathione deficiency contributes to oxidative stress, which may play a key role in aging and the worsening of many diseases including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, liver disease, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, HIV, AIDS, cancer, heart attack, and diabetes.

Hand Washing: An easy way to prevent infection. Defending you and your family from germs can be a full time job. According to many health experts, your first line of defense is handwashing, and according to the May Clinic, hand washing is a simple habit that can help keep you healthy.

Proper handwashing technique is as follows:
Wet your hands with warm, running water and apply liquid soap or use a clean bar soap. (Warm water is more effective than cold at breaking down the bodies oils on your hands that hold soils and bacteria.) Lather well.

Rub your hands vigorously together for at least 15 to 20 seconds.

Scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails.

Rinse well and dry hands with a clean disposable towel.
Use a towel to turn off the faucet.

The dangers of not washing your hands. Despite the proven health benefits of hand washing, many people don't practice this habit as often as they should — even after using the toilet. Throughout the day you accumulate germs on your hands from a variety of sources, such as direct contact with people, contaminated surfaces, foods, even animals and animal waste. If you don't wash your hands frequently enough, you can infect yourself with these germs by touching your eyes, nose or mouth. And you can spread these germs to others by touching them or by touching surfaces that they also touch, such as doorknobs.

Infectious diseases that are commonly spread through hand-to-hand contact include the common cold, flu and several gastrointestinal disorders, such as infectious diarrhea. While most people will get over a cold, the flu can be much more serious. Some people with the flu, particularly older adults and people with chronic medical problems, can develop pneumonia. The combination of the flu and pneumonia, in fact, is the eighth-leading cause of death among Americans.
Inadequate hand hygiene also contributes to food-related illnesses, such as salmonella and E. coli infection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as 76 million Americans get a food-borne illness each year. Of these, about 5,000 die as a result of their illness. Others experience the annoying signs and symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

When should you wash your hands? Although it's impossible to keep your bare hands germ-free, there are times when it's critical to wash your hands to limit the transfer of bacteria, viruses and other microbes.

Always wash your hands:

After using the toilet

After changing a diaper — wash the diaper-wearer's hands, too

After touching animals or animal waste

Before and after preparing food, especially before and immediately after handling raw meat, poultry or fish

Before eating

After blowing your nose

After coughing or sneezing into your hands

Before and after treating wounds or cuts

Before and after touching a sick or injured person

After handling garbage

Before inserting or removing contact lenses

When using public restrooms, such as those in airports, train stations, bus stations and restaurants

Kids need clean hands, too. You can help your children avoid getting sick by insisting that they wash their hands properly and frequently. To get kids into the habit, teach by example. Wash your hands with your children and supervise their hand washing. Place hand-washing reminders at children's eye level, such as a chart by the bathroom sink for children to mark every time they wash their hands. Make sure the sink is low enough for children to use, or that it has a stool underneath so that children can reach it. Tell your children to wash their hands for as long as it takes them to sing their ABCs, "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" or the "Happy Birthday" song. This works especially well with younger children, who may rush when washing their hands.

Older children and adolescents also can use alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Younger children can use them, too — with an adult's help. Just make sure the sanitizer has completely dried before your child touches anything. This will avoid ingestion of alcohol from hand-to-mouth contact. Store the container safely away after use.

Hand washing is especially important for children who attend child care. Children younger than 3 years in child care are at greater risk of respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases, which can easily spread to family members and others in the community.

To protect your child's health, be sure your child care provider promotes sound hygiene, including frequent hand washing or use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Ask whether the children are required to wash their hands several times a day — not just before meals. Note, too, whether diapering areas are cleaned after each use and whether eating and diapering areas are well separated.

On the news it's been reported that the supply of flu vaccine has been fully distributed in the U.S., and there's no more to be had. This year, demand for the vaccine has greatly outstripped supply, creating a shortage. (This statement never seems to change from year to year)

Flu is a highly contagious disease, usually more prevalent in the Winter and Spring. It is spread from discharges from the mouth and nose from infected persons. Idaho Balsam Fir is a conifer oil distilled in northern Idaho. It has been used for treating muscle aches and pains, sinusitis, bronchitis, and other respiratory disorders.

As you probably know, the flu requires bed rest, a well-balanced diet, and lots of liquids )water, homemade Lemonade, vegetable juices, soups and herbal teas.) Fill your diffuser with Lemon, Eucalyptus or Lavender to disinfect the room air and keep the nasal passages clear. If you have a sore throat, place one drop Melrose (blend) essential oil on your tongue and swallow. Do this every half hour until the pain is gone. The Thieves blend is also an excellent choice. Add one drop of Thieves to 1/4 cup of warm water, gargle and swallow. Do as often as needed.
It is important that you are aware of any safety precautions, as some essential oils can sting or burn so they need to be diluted. Cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil may be used as a carrier oil. Please contact me if you have ANY questions about dilution.

Diffusing Oils:
When oils are diffused in a home, office or classroom, they purify the air itself by removing toxins, metallic particles and other harmful microscopic debris. They also increase the atmospheric oxygen of the air, and boost levels of beneficial ozone and negative ions which dramatically inhibit the growth and reproduction of airborne pathogens.

Further, as the odorous molecules drift to the various surfaces of each room they rapidly kill virtually all pathogenic bacteria, viruses, rifles, molds and fungi they come into contact with. And lastly, they completely destroy odors from mold, cigarettes, household pets, bathrooms and more. Fill a 2 ounce glass spray bottle with distilled water, add 6-8 drops of your oil of choice and place one on each toilet (Purification recommended) and other select places.

Perhaps the most popular and effective method of diffusing oils is to buy a product called a (cold) "Diffuser," which sprays an ultra-fine mist of the essential oil of your choice into the air. The millions of misted particles sprayed from a diffuser are so fine they can hang in the air of your house, vehicle, office or classroom literally for hours, spreading from room to room via the normal air circulation that occurs as you walk through the area. For economy and efficiency, it is recommended to attach a simple timer to the diffuser. You can program the timer to be on, for example, for 15 minutes and off for 30 minutes, conserving oils and money. I've covered diffusing, in previous messages, but please let me know if I need to send you the "diffusing" report again.

*** VERY IMPORTANT POINT ABOUT DIFFUSING OILS:
Whatever you do, DO NOT HEAT YOUR OILS. Keep them around room temperature. Heating the essential oils will not only ruin the therapeutic value of the oil, but it can also harm you. Research shows that high temperatures will change the chemistry. This changed chemistry can be toxic to the human body.
This is simply basic organic chemistry 101. If you want to fragrance a room and obtain health benefits, use a cold diffuser. Do not use a light bulb called an Aromalamp or burn oils with fire from a candle.

More attacks of the swine flu are already occurring in many parts of the world. Most people are still confused about what exactly they need do to avoid getting infected. Here are some facts that might help.

Symptoms of Swine Flu:

Fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through

2009 Balsam Fir Harvest: Once again our Founder and President, Gary Young, was on the front lines to ensure Young Living essential oils are the purest and most potent available—he recently wrapped up a successful balsam fir harvest in northern Idaho!

There he employed the help of many Young Living employees and distributors, and his commitment to the Young Living Therapeutic Grade™ standard was evident as he oversaw every step of the harvest. We've created a short video for you to enjoy that highlights some of the action:

Those who participated in this rare opportunity commented on the importance of Gary's hands-on involvement in the oil-sourcing process. General Manager of the Americas, Mike McLean, was thrilled to be a part of the hard work and dedication that Gary demands for his oils:

"Gary made sure that everyone got to be personally involved in each step of the harvesting process," says Mike. "From cutting trees to loading trucks, we all got to experience everything that goes into a batch of balsam fir oil."

Summer Recipes w/Young Living Essential Oils

Planning on a picnic this weekend? Summer is the perfect time to incorporate essential oils into your activities and your food. And since no one wants to spend time in the hot kitchen, here are some quick and easy recipes that you can whip up and enjoy anytime. Refreshing Cherry Lemonade

2/3 c. Blue Agave
4 drops lemon essential oil
4 large lemons
1 bottle sparkling cherry soda
Filtered water
In a gallon pitcher, combine agave, lemon essential oil, juice of lemons, and sparkling cherry soda. Mix well and add filtered water to fill pitcher. Chill in refrigerator and serve over ice. Garnish with sprig of mint or lemon wedge. Makes eight 16-ounce servings.

Tomato Cucumber Summer Salad

1/2 c. cider vinegar
1 tsp. Blue Agave
1 tsp. salt
1 drop dill essential oil
1 drop black pepper essential oil
4 Tbsp. vegetable oil
4 cucumbers sliced
2 c. red onion chopped
4 ripe tomatoes cut into wedges
In a large bowl, mix vinegar, sugar, salt, dill essential oil, black pepper essential oil, and vegetable oil. Add cucumbers, onion, and tomatoes. Toss and chill in refrigerator at least 30 minutes before serving.

Ginger Cinnamon Glazed Peaches

1/4 c. Blue Agave
3 drops ginger essential oil
3 drops cinnamon bark essential oil
1 Tbsp. butter
4 peaches quartered
Stir agave and essential oils together and set aside. Add butter to frying pan. Heat on medium. Add peaches once butter has melted. Gently cook peaches 1–2 minutes. Brush agave mixture on each side of peaches. Allow glaze to caramelize on each side. Once peaches are caramelized on each side remove from heat and plate. Drizzle remaining glaze on peaches and serve. Makes 4–8 servings.

Before I run out of it, I fill it up again with water. I can usually fill it up 5 or 6 times before it runs out and it will still be potent and effective. Papaya Skin Care

Perk up your skin and eliminate the day’s worries with papaya. It’s beneficial for skin care and repair. You can use papaya to treat or eliminate old dead skin cells, dandruff and other skin disorders and even to reduce the signs of premature aging. The following recipes will show you how.

Acne: Apply a mask using the fleshy side of a green papaya skin on the acne. A papaya diet supports the treatment internally. Apply a mask of pickled grated papaya in vinegar once a week. Dilute papaya vinegar with water in a one to 10 ratio and use it as a skin cleanser. Treat stubborn areas with undiluted papaya vinegar and papaya oil.

Age spots: Place the fleshy side of the skin from a mature green papaya onto the age spots until the spots fade.

Dandruff: Shampoo hair with diluted papaya vinegar mixed with lemon juice and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse the hair with diluted papaya vinegar. Papaya hair shampoos are also available in health food stores.

Skin with enlarged pores: Washings or compresses with diluted papaya vinegar.

Skin, rough: Native Americans rub rough skin with the fleshy side of the skin from a ripe papaya.

Skin, unclear: For deep skin cleansing, apply a papaya mask followed by an application of papaya vinegar weekly, diluted with water in a one to 10 ratio.

Skin, hard: Repeatedly apply squeezed leaves or the fleshy side of the skin from a green fruit. For hard skin on the foot, use papaya vinegar in foot baths.

Sunspots: Apply the fleshy side of the skin from a green fruit to the spots. Also apply papaya vinegar to the spots.

Wrinkles: Old skin cells make wrinkles deeper. Use a papaya powder (sold in health food stores as "Paw-Paw Condiment") face mask to reduce old dead skin cells and to make the skin smoother. Apply the fleshy side of the skin from a green papaya.

In rare cases and with long-term application, highly concentrated papaya could cause sensitivity and skin irritation.

Papaya Vinegar

Cut the fruit (with the skin) into thin slices. Fill two-thirds of a glass jar with the papaya. Pour in apple cider vinegar until the papaya is well covered. Let mature for four weeks. Strain out the papaya and the vinegar is ready to use.

Papaya Oil

Cut the skin or leaves of a papaya into small pieces and place them into a pot (do not use an aluminum pot). Add enough extra-virgin olive oil to cover all the pieces. Simmer the oil for five minutes, then store the oil and plant parts in a cool place. After two days, extract the oil by squeezing the plant parts in a towel.

Skin Cleanser

3 Tbsp (45 mL) pure honey
1/2 tsp (2 mL) extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp (2 mL) wheat germ oil
1 tsp (5 mL) papaya juice

Mix the ingredients together. Wash the skin with warm water. Gently massage the cleanser onto moist skin, then rinse well with water. Apply twice daily.

Skin Toner

2 tsp (10 mL) papaya vinegar
1/4 cup (60 mL) rose water
4 tsp (20 mL) lavender water

Mix the ingredients together. Use twice daily.

Moisturizing Oil

2 Tbsp (30 mL) papaya oil
4 tsp (20 mL) calendula oil
1 tsp (5 mL) almond oil
1 tsp (5 mL) rosehip oil

Mix the ingredients together. Gently massage into the skin twice daily.

Papaya Fruit Mask

1 tsp (5 mL) pure honey
1 egg
1 tsp (5 mL) cream
1 tsp (5 mL) papaya oil

Mix the ingredients together and apply to well-cleansed skin. Leave the mask on for 10 to 15 minutes. Thoroughly rinse the skin with warm water, apply papaya skin toner and then papaya moisturizing oil.

Bathing With Papaya

For these recipes, mix all the ingredients together. Add the oils to the bath water after filling the tub to prevent the essential oils from evaporating.

Relaxing Bath

1/2 (125 mL) papaya vinegar
1 tsp (5 mL) papaya oil
3 drops lavender essential oil
2 drops cedarwood essential oil

This is a good anti-stress bath and it nourishes the skin at the same time.

Pain-Relieving Bath

1/2 cup (125 mL) papaya vinegar
1 tsp (5 mL) papaya oil
3 drops lavender essential oil
2 drops rosemary essential oil

This bath is also excellent for muscle relaxation.

Refreshing Bath

1/2 cup (125 mL) papaya vinegar
1 tsp (5 mL) papaya oil
3 drops lavender essential oil
2 drops orange essential oil

This bath will leave you invigorated and refreshed.

What are Essential Oils?

An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled (most frequently by steam or water) from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. Essential oils, contrary to the use of the word "oil" are not really oily-feeling at all. Most essential oils are clear, but some oils such as patchouli, orange and lemongrass are amber or yellow in color.

Essential oils contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from. Essential oils are highly concentrated and a little goes a long way.

Essential oils are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils. Where essential oils are derived from the true plants, perfume oils are artificially created fragrances or contain artificial substances and do not offer the therapeutic benefits that essential oils offer. The chemical composition and aroma of essential oils can provide valuable psychological and physical therapeutic benefits. These benefits are usually achieved through methods including inhalation and application of the diluted oil to the skin.

Essential oils are often used by diluting them with a carrier oil (sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, grapeseed oil) and then applying this blend to the skin for absorption. See the Carrier Oil Profile section for more detailed information about carrier oils.

Careful inhalation of the oils can also provide therapeutic benefit as the oil molecules enter the lungs and are absorbed into the bloodstream.

Essential oils can very greatly in quality and price. Various factors that can affect the quality and price of the oil include the rarity of the plant, country and conditions that the plant was grown, quality standards of the distiller, and how much oil is produced by the plant.

Essential oils can often be purchased as blends of several essential oils. The advantage if it is a blend of pure essential oils is that you can save from having to buy every essential oil individually. The disadvantage is that you have no control over the blend by not mixing it yourself nor can you reliably mix the blend with other oils.
